Jun 4, 2026 at 7:31 AMThe Union Pacific Railroad unveiled its latest commemorative locomotive, No. 4547, on Tuesday. This locomotive embarks on its first mission to transport components for NASA’s Artemis III lunar exploration program. The transport includes solid rocket boosters from the Space Launch System, which are significant for deep space exploration and humanity’s return to the Moon, as Union Pacific recently announced.
The transport began from a shipping facility near Corinne, Utah. The locomotive’s christening ceremony was attended by Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena, Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz, Utah Senate President J. Stuart Adams, as well as executives from Northrop Grumman, NASA, and Wabtec. Locomotive No. 4547 celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States and is intended to honor the current president, according to the company.
In addition to the new locomotive, No. 1616 was also present, another commemorative locomotive meant to honor President Abraham Lincoln and the history of Union Pacific. Lincoln founded Union Pacific in 1862 when he signed the Pacific Railway Act, which enabled the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
