AfA warns DHS of customs reduction
Jun 1, 2026 at 1:42 PMThe MODAL GROUP has highlighted the growing importance of rail freight transport for France in a recent statement. With the objective of increasing the modal share of rail freight transport from 9% to 18% by 2030, electric rail freight is viewed as a strategic tool to promote energy sovereignty. This is set against the backdrop of an intended accelerated electrification of the French economy, aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Challenges of multimodal infrastructure
Despite these ambitions, France faces challenges according to the MODAL GROUP, particularly due to the lack of suitable multimodal terminals. This infrastructure is crucial for a smooth transition to increased rail freight transport. The MODAL GROUP warns that without faster investments in this infrastructure, the competitiveness of major French ports could be at risk. Compared to the logistics centers in Northern Europe, which are already well connected to the major European transport corridors, France could fall behind.
In this context, the company outlines four priorities to strengthen intermodal transport in the country:
- Ensuring the freight investment program
- Recognizing multimodal terminals as strategic infrastructure
- Connections of terminals to key corridors
- Mobilizing private financing
