May 6, 2026 at 10:42 AMThe cargo volume at Miami International Airport (MIA) increased by 13.6% in 2025 to nearly 3.5 million tons. This development has given the airport a new position in global rankings, as current data from Airports Council International shows: MIA is now the busiest cargo airport in the Western Hemisphere.
In the new rankings, MIA has surpassed the airports in Louisville and Memphis, which serve as global hubs for UPS and FedEx, making it the busiest airport for total cargo in the United States. Worldwide, MIA ranks third, behind the Asian cargo centers in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The new rankings were announced by Daniella Levine Cava (2nd from left), the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, and Ralph Cutie (far right), the Director and CEO of MIA, during the annual State of the Ports luncheon of the World Trade Center Miami on April 27.
Growth in passenger traffic
In addition to cargo figures, MIA recorded more than 55.3 million passengers in 2025, elevating the airport two places to 8th among the busiest passenger airports in the United States. In total flight numbers among U.S. airports, MIA rose from 9th to 8th place.
Furthermore, MIA has made progress in three additional global rankings: from 6th to 4th in total cargo (freight plus mail), from 5th to 4th in international freight traffic, and from 13th to 11th for total flights. The continued growth in the cargo sector also persisted into the first quarter of 2026, with cargo deliveries increasing by 15.7% compared to the previous year.
