Polish rail traffic grows significantly in March

In March 2026, Polish rail traffic recorded an increase in passenger numbers as well as freight transport. According to the Office of Rail Transport (UTK), over 40.3 million people used the train, marking the highest figure since the start of monthly statistics in 2012. In the same month, the railways transported more than 19.3 million tons of freight, representing an increase of 1.4 million tons or 7.9% compared to March 2025. The freight ton-kilometers amounted to over 5.1 billion: an increase of nearly 0.5 billion ton-kilometers or 10.5% year-on-year. The operational performance of freight trains exceeded 7.6 million train kilometers, a rise of 1.1 million train kilometers or 16.8% compared to the previous year, as reported by the Polish Office of Rail Transport.

The average distance transported per ton of freight in March was 266 km, which is an increase of over 6 km compared to the same month last year. These figures are the highest recorded in the freight sector since the beginning of the year. Compared to February 2026, the weight of transported goods increased by nearly 3 million tons, corresponding to an increase of 18.3%.

Additionally, the freight ton-kilometers rose by over 0.9 billion, representing a growth of 22.2%. Train kilometers also increased by 1.4 million, which corresponds to a rise of 22.8% compared to the previous month. The average distance traveled per ton of freight in March was over 8 km longer than in February 2026.
