Air freight market under pressure due to conflict
Apr 10, 2026 at 4:16 PMThe oil pollution in the Deurganckdock has caused significant disruptions in the Port of Antwerp: The incident occurred during a bunkering operation in the Deurganckdock, where an oil disaster took place, according to the port. Although the source of the pollution has been stopped and the affected ships have been isolated for cleaning operations, the oil spread overnight towards the Schelde, as reported by the port. Ship traffic between Buoy 80, above the Noordzeeterminal, and the entrance to the Deurganckdock has been completely blocked. The Zandvliet and Berendrecht locks have also been closed due to oil pollution.
According to a port update released around noon on Friday, the Schelde has been reopened to shipping traffic, while the Deurganckdock remains closed. Specialized vessels are on-site to carry out the oil cleanup. The operational priority is to completely clear the Deurganckdock as well as the Noordzee and Europa terminals and the Berendrecht-Zandvliet lock complex.
The ecological impacts of the oil pollution are being monitored by the port in collaboration with civil protection, the Maritime and Coastal Services Authority, and De Vlaamse Waterweg.
