ACC Aviation aims to expand cargo charters
Apr 2, 2026 at 7:28 AMThe Norwegian Grieg Maritime Group has signed a contract with the British technology service provider GT Wings to install at least two AirWing™20 on its fleet. This measure aims to enhance energy efficiency, which is significant for both climate protection and economic success. Given the challenges posed by new fuels and ships, it is necessary to optimize existing fleets as well.
The AirWing™20 is a jet sail that will enable the vessel „Star Kirkenes“ to harness wind power, thereby significantly reducing fuel consumption. Marte Waage Haga, Technical Project Manager at Grieg Star, explains: “While substantial savings are possible, the actual impact depends on the trading patterns of the vessel.”
New Generation of Jet Sails
“The reduction of our fuel consumption will always make sense. Our technical team has evaluated various wind-assisted propulsion solutions for months. When we saw the technology from GT Wings, we were immediately interested. We are confident in their assessment and look forward to seeing our first ship equipped with jet sails,” says Matt Duke, CEO of Grieg Maritime Group.
The choice fell on the AirWing™ because it offers high thrust in a compact design, representing a new generation of jet sail technology developed for space-constrained applications. Liam Campbell, CCO of GT Wings, emphasizes: “The global fleet with wind-assisted propulsion is entering a significant growth phase, with forecasts showing more than 80 additional ships in operation by the end of 2026. Our partnership with Grieg Maritime Group, our first commercial order, is an important step in our growth strategy.”
Option for Further Installations
The design of the AirWing™ allows for the installation of two jet sails on the bow of the „Star Kirkenes“ without affecting loading operations or the vessel’s capacity. The installation is planned for the dry dock period at the end of 2026 or early 2027. This project represents the second complete installation of an AirWing™ ship and is a crucial step for GT Wings in commercial implementation.
“We are excited to work closely with Grieg Maritime Group on this project and support their ambitions to take a leading role in sustainable shipping. This collaboration marks an important milestone as we transition into commercial implementation and continue to validate the performance of the AirWing™ on a large scale,” explains George Thompson, CEO of GT Wings.
The contract between Grieg Maritime Group and GT Wings includes the installation of two jet sails on the *Star Kirkenes*, with the option to perform the same for the other three K-class vessels.
