Jul 2, 2026 at 8:03 AMbound4blue has announced the verification of its methodology for calculating the wind propulsion force matrix by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This validation is intended to help shipowners quantify the contribution of eSAIL installations to compliance with environmental standards such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), and the requirements of FuelEU Maritime, as stated by the company.
Trust through verification
The confirmation of the methodology by ABS is expected to strengthen confidence in bound4blue’s CFD-based approach and could accelerate the implementation of future wind propulsion projects. According to the company, the verification is part of a series of assessments by classification societies aimed at providing shipowners with a basis for evaluating the regulatory and financial benefits of eSAIL suction sails.
bound4blue’s methodology combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with wind tunnel-validated tools to create specific aerodynamic force matrices for ships. This is intended to enable an accurate assessment of wind propulsion force without the need for extensive testing. The methodology takes into account both the aerodynamics of the sails and that of the ship, allowing for customization to specific operating conditions.
