Mar 24, 2026 at 9:02 AMAfter pilot projects and the first larger installation on an operational ship, the „Vertom Tula,“ Wattlab plans to expand its solar flat rack solution to the international bulk goods market. Currently, the solar flat racks are suitable for use on ships up to and including the Supramax segment. Additionally, the company has begun developing seaworthy solar solutions for larger ship segments, such as Panamax and Capesize, as it reports.
Wattlab specializes in integrating solar energy into shipping and claims to have demonstrated that solar energy can be a viable and scalable option for onboard power supply. In particular, the technology is used to meet hotel loads.
The results of the conducted pilot projects are intended to demonstrate the reliability of the system at sea. The system was initially tested on the „Vertom Anette“ in collaboration with TNO and the shipping company Vertom. Subsequently, work began on the „Vertom Tula,“ where 44 solar flat racks were installed. According to the company, these contribute to reducing the hotel load onboard by approximately 20%.
