Mar 20, 2026 at 9:22 AMThe Clean Arctic Alliance welcomes the implementation of new emission control areas in the Canadian Arctic and the Norwegian Sea. The aim is to reduce air pollutants from shipping and better protect sensitive ecosystems.
The emission control areas (ECAs) are designed to lower regional emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. This is intended to improve air quality and reduce health risks. The regulations take effect immediately, although a transition period for stricter sulfur limits will last until March 2027.
Focus on additional emission sources
In addition to progress on traditional pollutants, the organisation has called for further measures to reduce black carbon particles. These significantly contribute to the warming of the Arctic and accelerate the melting of ice surfaces.
Increasing pressure for action
Shipping in the Arctic is on the rise, leading to increased emissions. Against this backdrop, the Alliance sees a need for further regulation at the international level.
It has thus urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to consider additional measures to more comprehensively limit emissions and to reduce the long-term environmental impact.
