Feb 25, 2026 at 11:13 AMBritish companies are facing the possibility of soon utilizing direct rail freight connections to Europe again. A new government-supported deal, recently announced, aims to enable the return of regular rail freight traffic across the Channel. This initiative is viewed by the British government as part of its strategy to promote rail freight transport, as stated.
As part of the deal, Network Rail, along with its property development company Platform4, will take control of the Barking Eurohub site in East London. The site is currently owned by Legal & General. The plans include investments of around £15 million to transform the site into an international logistics hub.
The resumption of regular freight traffic through the Channel Tunnel is seen by the government as a measure to reduce pollution, potholes, and congestion. Additionally, the initiative is expected to create new jobs.
