Liège Airport looks to the future with optimism
Jan 20, 2026 at 11:28 AMThe Vienna International Airport achieved a record result in air freight in 2025. With a total of 313,763 tons of freight, a new high was reached, representing an increase of 5.3% compared to the previous year. This positive development is primarily attributed to the targeted expansion of long-haul services as well as growth in the e-commerce and pharmaceutical sectors. The Vienna Pharma Handling Center also recorded an increase, surpassing the previous year’s results by 6.4%.
Important Role in International Air Freight Traffic
Mag. Julian Jäger, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG, emphasizes the central importance of a powerful cargo sector for airports. “Air freight secures global goods flows and promotes economic growth. Vienna Airport plays a key role as a logistics hub – and as the most important gateway for air freight to Central and Eastern Europe,” explains Jäger.
The efficiency of processes in the air freight sector is crucial. Mag. Michael Zach, Senior Vice President Ground Handling & Cargo Operations of Flughafen Wien AG, highlights that all processes must seamlessly interlock to ensure quick handling of shipments. The cargo hub Vienna particularly benefited in 2025 from the increase in volumes to North America. Zach expresses confidence that the positive development can continue in 2026.
Import and Export Figures on the Rise
In the past year, 167,568 tons of air freight were imported through Vienna Airport, representing an increase of 2.8% compared to the record year 2024. These figures underscore the airport’s role as an air freight hub for Central and Eastern Europe. In particular, growing e-commerce volumes from Asia contributed to the positive development. In the export sector, tonnages rose sharply in the first half of the year, primarily due to U.S. customs policy. A total of 146,195 tons were exported, marking an increase of 8.4% compared to the previous year. Key export markets are Asia and the USA.
Geographical Advantages and Infrastructure
Vienna Airport has established itself as a significant global freight hub for Central and Eastern Europe due to its geographically advantageous location. Leading cargo airlines serve the airport for intercontinental transport. The 24-hour operational readiness allows for quick turnaround times. Ten aircraft parking positions of category F are available in close proximity to the terminal for air freight. The airport is firmly integrated into the European network of air freight substitute services and reaches the main consumer and economic centers in Central and Eastern Europe within 24 to 48 hours. The publicly listed operating company Flughafen Wien AG employs more than 5,400 staff and is one of the largest employers in the region.
