Timocom Transport Barometer Shows Mixed Sentiment
May 19, 2025 at 3:04 PMWhether for quality control, automation, energy savings, or controlling robots – the application possibilities for artificial intelligence in production are numerous. However, looking at the German industry, it becomes clear: Only a quarter of companies believe they are already successfully utilizing the potential of AI (24 percent).
(Berlin) The remaining three-quarters do not yet feel capable of exploiting corresponding opportunities (72 percent). These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the Digital Association Bitkom, conducted among 552 industrial companies in the manufacturing sector with at least 100 employees in Germany.
“Artificial intelligence can improve processes in production, prevent errors, and save costs. However, in addition to a lack of time and expertise, a complex regulatory environment and the resulting legal uncertainties are the main reasons why the use of AI in the German industry has so far been rather hesitant,” says Lukas Spohr, an expert in manufacturing and Industry 4.0 at Bitkom. 9 out of 10 companies (88 percent) also believe that politics must not stifle AI innovations through overregulation.
Promising in Energy Management
The use of AI in energy management is seen as particularly promising – here, 85 percent of the German industry sees great opportunities. Companies also expect positive effects in the fields of robotics (74 percent), analytics (73 percent), and inventory management (72 percent). For machine configuration, 7 out of 10 companies see potential for AI use (70 percent), while 58 percent anticipate possible advantages in quality management. Over half of the companies also recognize the opportunities of AI use in programming (52 percent), design (52 percent), and project planning or technical management (51 percent).
