Jul 14, 2026 at 7:01 AMFrancesco Avanzini has been appointed as the new president of GS1 Italy. He will serve a three-year term, succeeding Francesco Del Porto. Avanzini is currently the General Director of Consorzio Nazionale Conad and brings over 30 years of experience in the consumer goods industry. In his new role, he will be supported by Aldo Sutter, Managing Director of Gruppo Sutter, and Alessandro d’Este, CEO of Gruppo Veronesi, as vice presidents. Domenico Brisigotti, President of Coop Italia, will also be part of the leadership team.
Focus areas of the new term
In his inaugural statement, Avanzini expressed his pride and sense of responsibility towards the business community. He emphasized that digitalization, supply chain efficiency, and sustainability will be central themes of his term. In the upcoming triennium, GS1 Italy plans to advance existing projects such as the implementation of the GS1 QR code, the extensive use of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), and the optimization of logistical processes. Avanzini stated that the goal is to integrate these solutions into the companies‘ strategies.
Another focus will be addressing Agentic AI and Agentic Commerce. Avanzini highlighted that the quality of data is crucial for establishing GS1 standards as a trusted infrastructure. These standards are intended to enable new AI systems to accurately identify products, companies, and information, generating automated and secure processes.
Professional background
After graduating in economics and statistics in 1987, Avanzini held various positions in marketing and sales at leading food companies such as Aia, Barilla, and Arena. In 2009, he joined Consorzio Nazionale Conad, where he initially served as Sales Manager before rising to Operational Director and eventually General Director. Additionally, Avanzini is the Chairman of the Board of AgeCore, a trade alliance that unites five major European retailers.
