Jul 7, 2026 at 7:52 AMRealterm and the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority (SARAA) have announced a strategic partnership to develop a modern cargo facility at Harrisburg International Airport (MDT). This new facility will offer flexible storage space of up to 9,750 square meters and is designed to meet the demands of the air freight market in the region.
Development of a modern cargo facility
The planned cargo facility will be constructed directly adjacent to the runway, allowing for direct access for aircraft and efficient handling of cargo. The design of the facility will be customizable to meet the specific needs of tenants. It could either be utilized by a single operator or divided into up to four separate areas. The facility will include, among other features, eight airside access points for air freight, 40 loading docks for ground transportation, and more than 180 parking spaces for vehicles.
Jennifer Carter, Senior Vice President for Airport Affairs at Realterm, emphasizes the importance of MDT for freight growth in the region: “The strategic location of the airport in the heart of Central Pennsylvania makes it the ideal choice for operators seeking a competitive advantage in the Mid-Atlantic.” According to Airports Council International (ACI) World, the airport processed over 55,000 tons of cargo in 2025. This was an increase of 5.7% compared to 2024, but it relies almost exclusively on two providers: FedEx with 29,900 tons (+23.8%) and UPS with 25,700 tons (-9.5%).
Strategic location and infrastructure
The central location of Harrisburg International Airport offers excellent connectivity to major transportation corridors and a catchment area that includes large parts of Central Pennsylvania as well as the cities of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New York City. These geographical advantages have already attracted significant investments from companies such as UPS, Bayer, and Coca-Cola.
Alexi Lachambre, Senior Vice President for Airport Infrastructure Investments at Realterm, highlights that the partnership with SARAA represents a long-term collaboration and that there is significant untapped potential at MDT. “This is a rare opportunity in today’s market to develop an immediately available site at a strategic location in the U.S.,” says Lachambre.
The new cargo facility will be developed according to LEED standards and is expected to integrate environmentally friendly technologies such as motion sensors for LED lighting and infrastructure for electric vehicles. Additionally, the facility will feature specialized facilities for handling temperature-sensitive cargo.
Timothy J. Edwards, Executive Director of SARAA, also expresses positive sentiments about the development:
“We are very pleased with the partnership with Realterm and the prospect of a modern air cargo facility that complements our recently completed $60 million expansion of the air freight area.”
Realterm brings over 30 years of experience in airport infrastructure to the project and has already completed numerous significant projects at airports worldwide.
