Jul 2, 2026 at 11:12 AMTexel Air Australasia will take over the air freight operations at the new Cargo Precinct of the Western Sydney International Airports (WSI). The 24-hour operation of the freight area is set to commence on July 26, 2026, with the first commercial freighters from Qantas Freight landing on that day. Simon Hickey, CEO of WSI, expressed his pleasure about the collaboration with Texel Air and emphasized that the new freight hub will significantly enhance the air freight capacities of the city. This is expected to create new jobs and facilitate access to global markets for businesses.
Hickey stated that Texel Air, as a partner in the Cargo Terminal Operations Group, which also includes Menzies Aviation and dnata Cargo, will make a valuable contribution to the opening of the freight area. The integrated freight facility will offer 24-hour operational hours and is easily accessible via the recently upgraded Northern Road. Additionally, it is located near key freight and logistics centers in Kemps Creek and the developing industrial areas of the Aerotropolis.
The fleet of Texel Air, consisting of Boeing 737-800BCFs, is well positioned to support customer needs, according to Hickey. This will strengthen services for domestic partners transporting freight across the country weekly while also providing international charter capacities to promote access to lucrative global markets.
John Chisholm, founder and chairman of Texel Air, emphasized that the infrastructure of the Western Sydney International Airport aligns well with the company’s operational model and long-term growth plans. He described the new freight area as transformative infrastructure for Australian air freight, enabling reliable 24-hour operations. Texel Air will be able to respond flexibly to customer requirements, regular freight flows, and time-sensitive shipments.
The Cargo Precinct of WSI is designed to expand with the growth of demand. While the first phase will open in July 2026, there is potential to significantly increase capacities in the coming years to meet the needs of consumers and businesses.
Texel Air Australasia was founded in 2022 and is a New Zealand-based ACMI and charter air freight operator. The company is part of the Bahrain-based Texel Air Group and operates an exclusive fleet of Boeing 737-800BCF aircraft. The airline offers tailored air freight solutions and is strategically positioned at five locations to ensure reliable support for express logistics, e-commerce, and industrial supply chains.
