Jul 1, 2026 at 10:51 AMRecently, the Grimaldi Group took delivery of its new ship „Grande Oriente“ in Naples. This vessel is the twelfth ammonia-capable Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) of the Italian shipping company and was built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu. The „Grande Oriente“ is designed for the future use of ammonia as a replacement fuel, as the company states. With a length of 220 m and a width of 38 m, the „Grande Oriente“ has a gross tonnage of 93,145 and can achieve a service speed of 18 knots, according to Grimaldi. The ship is capable of transporting up to 9,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEU), which includes both electric vehicles and fossil fuel vehicles.
Strategic expansion in Western Asia
The name „Grande Oriente,“ which means „Great East,“ is intended to reflect the Grimaldi Group’s expansion into Asian markets. In recent years, the company has reportedly expanded its presence in this region through an extensive network of maritime services. This network connects strategic markets with over 150 ports across five continents. In line with this strategy, the „Grande Oriente“ will embark on its maiden voyage on the Asia-Europe route. This journey will begin in Taicang, China, and lead to Portbury in the United Kingdom, with plans to transport 700 linear meters of rolling cargo and more than 6,200 vehicles.
