Emirates has promoted two female pilots from the UAE to captains, marking a significant step in the advancement of women in aviation. Hanan Mohammed Jawad (photo) and Bakhita Al Mheiri are the first female citizens to achieve this rank at the airline. Both began their careers in the National Cadet Pilot Programme of the Emirates Group, which has trained numerous Emirati pilots.
Hanan Mohammed Jawad joined the company in 2008 and pursued her dream of becoming a pilot with determination. Through mentorship and support from fleet management, she was able to continuously develop her skills. Bakhita Al Mheiri started her training in 2011 and was inspired by successful Emirati female pilots. She has also achieved several milestones throughout her career.
This year, both pilots received their fourth stripes and are now flying as captains of the Boeing 777. Hanan has accumulated a total of 9,253 flight hours. She commented on her promotion, emphasizing that this is not the end for her, but the beginning of a new phase. „The path to command is paved over time, and my years as a First Officer have prepared me for this moment,“ she said.
Bakhita highlighted the importance of the mentorship programs at Emirates, which have not only provided her with technical skills but also personal values such as responsibility and continuous learning. „I hope to pass on the values and mentoring I received to the next generation,“ she explained.
Both pilots delivered a message to aspiring female pilots: „Our leadership has recognized women as essential partners in shaping the future of our country. Emirates creates the framework and opportunities for women to thrive.“
Capt Hassan Alhammadi, Divisional Senior Vice President Flight Operations at Emirates, emphasized the airline’s commitment to developing Emirati talent. „The Cadet Pilot Programme remains crucial in paving the way for young men and women to pursue careers as commercial pilots,“ he said.
The National Cadet Pilot Programme, launched in 1993, is a fully funded initiative of the Emirates Group. It has produced many Emirati pilots who are now in various leadership positions within Emirates and the UAE aviation industry. The program offers comprehensive flight training and prepares cadets for long-term careers as professional pilots.
