May 28, 2026 at 2:02 PMUS air service provider Atlas Air Worldwide has signed an agreement to acquire a 49% stake in Air Atlanta. This was announced on May 28, 2026. Air Atlanta is an internationally operating provider of ACMI and aircraft management services headquartered in Iceland, with operations in Iceland and Malta. This transaction creates a strategic partnership that expands Atlas’s global operating platform and enhances access to widebody aircraft capacity in key international markets.
As part of the agreement, Atlas Air, through its subsidiary Titan Aviation Holdings, will also acquire the aircraft owned by the Air Atlanta group. These aircraft will subsequently be leased back to Air Atlanta’s airlines to continue operations. Air Atlanta operates a fleet of 14 widebody freighters, including Boeing 747 and 777, as well as four passenger aircraft of the 777 type.
Strategic growth plans
Michael Steen, CEO of Atlas Air Worldwide, commented on the transaction, emphasizing that it reflects Atlas’s disciplined approach to strategic growth in a structurally constrained market for widebody freighters. „By combining Atlas’s global trade platform with Air Atlanta’s complementary operating model and European presence, we are expanding access to capacity and strengthening our ability to serve customers worldwide,“ Steen said. He highlighted that Air Atlanta has built a strong reputation over decades and that the partnership with the Air Atlanta team will strengthen both organizations.
The existing leadership of Air Atlanta will continue to run the business while both companies collaborate commercially to pursue global growth opportunities. Following the completion of the transaction, Air Atlanta’s management team will retain a 51% controlling interest in the airlines.
Baldvin M. Hermannsson, CEO of Air Atlanta, expressed his pleasure with the partnership with Atlas and emphasized that this transaction strengthens the company’s long-term growth strategy. „We firmly believe in the future growth of Air Atlanta, especially through the strategic partnership with Atlas,“ Hermannsson said. He stressed that the collaboration will expand access to markets and enhance the ability to provide flexible capacity solutions for existing and future customers.
Hannes Hilmarsson, Executive Chairman of the Air Atlanta group, who is leaving the company after 20 years in leadership positions, expressed pride in the development of Air Atlanta and the partnership with Atlas. „I leave the company in excellent hands with the existing management team and Atlas as the ideal partner for the future,“ Hilmarsson said.
The transaction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and the fulfillment of closing conditions.
