Brookfield acquires World Freight Company
May 19, 2026 at 10:04 AMThe SBB continues to realign its single wagon load traffic (Einzelwagenladungsverkehr EWLV) and will introduce a new model in December 2026. The aim is to improve train utilisation, reduce costs and make rail freight transport more economically viable in the long term. This is in response to a federal mandate that freight transport should be operated on a self-sustaining basis from 2033.
In the future, around 50 low-demand service points will no longer be served by EWLV. Currently, the network includes approximately 280 locations. According to SBB, around 98% of the previous transport volumes will still be transported by rail. At the same time, better-utilised trains are expected to increase efficiency.
The transition will bring changes for around 200 employees in Switzerland, primarily involving changes in work locations. Affected locations include Brig, Buchs SG, Chiasso, Thun and Fribourg. According to SBB, layoffs are expected to remain the exception. In parallel, the company plans additional recruitments, as around 300 new employees will be needed in freight transport over the coming years.
