UPS has announced a $48 million investment to expand its global network of temperature-controlled freight cross-docks. These new facilities, to be established at 27 locations worldwide, aim to enhance efficiency and speed in healthcare logistics, according to the company. The cross-dock facilities are located in America, Europe, and Asia and are designed to store and transport temperature-sensitive medications and therapies under specified temperature guidelines.
Expansion of the cold chain network
The facilities are specifically designed by UPS for short-term storage between air and ground transport, ensuring compliance with defined temperature ranges of 2–8°C, 15–25°C, and freezing. This initiative comes in response to the increasing demand for biologics that require precise temperature controls. According to forecasts from Growth Market Reports, which UPS references, the global demand for temperature-sensitive biologics is expected to reach an average annual growth rate of 8.3% by 2033, resulting in a market volume of $39.1 billion. UPS emphasizes that expanding its expertise is crucial to ensuring product quality and safety throughout the entire transportation process.
