Australian government invests in rail network
May 7, 2026 at 9:24 AMCanadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and CSX Corporation recently introduced a comprehensive modernization of their „Premium Service Southeast Mexico Express“ (SMX). This initiative aims to reduce transit times for customers and improve access to new markets, as stated by CPKC.
Transit times and options
The updated „SMX Service“ now offers faster connections between markets in the southeastern United States, including Atlanta, Charlotte, and Central Florida, as well as destinations in Texas and Mexico, such as Dallas and Monterrey, according to the company. The new transit times are competitive with those of truck transport. The improvements are expected to shorten travel time by up to one day between Atlanta and Dallas and by approximately 2.5 days between Atlanta and Central Mexico.
These optimizations are, according to CPCK, the result of investments in infrastructure, particularly in the tracks, bridges, and signaling systems of the former Meridian & Bigbee Railroad (MNBR). Additionally, investments in the routes in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas are contributing to the modernization to enable higher speeds.
