Apr 17, 2026 at 8:06 AMThe technology group Wärtsilä has announced an increase in performance for its 4-stroke engine designed for ammonia fuel. This improvement raises the output of the „Wärtsilä 25“ ammonia engine to 315 kW per cylinder at 900 rpm and 345 kW per cylinder at 1,000 rpm, according to the company. As a result, the engine reaches the performance level of the LNG-powered „Wärtsilä 25DF engine.“ A key advantage of this development is the reduction in the number of cylinders required while maintaining the same power demand. This, according to the manufacturer, leads to simplified installation and maintenance.
Flexibility in fuel selection
The new power level of the „Wärtsilä 25“ ammonia engine, which covers a range of 1.9 to 3.1 MW, is suitable for various applications, both as a main engine and as an auxiliary engine. The adaptation to the power level of the LNG-powered „Wärtsilä 25DF“ also enhances the retrofitting capability of the engine. This is intended to provide ship owners with greater flexibility regarding fuel choice. The performance increase was tested in the fall of 2025 under the supervision of representatives from classification societies.
