The Last Landing of the MD-11F for Lufthansa Cargo
Oct 17, 2021 at 7:56 PMMediaMarkt Saturn Germany has officially opened the National Distribution Center (NDC) Göttingen/Rosdorf as part of its group-wide strategic supply chain initiative. The NDC in Rosdorf near Göttingen serves as a central warehouse for all markets and will also function as a fulfillment center for direct customer orders in Germany in the future. It has a storage area of 72,000 m² and a capacity for an annual turnover of sales units in the three-digit million range.
(Ingolstadt/Göttingen) This optimizes the efficiency of MediaMarktSaturn’s logistics processes significantly, allowing customers to benefit from improved product availability and faster deliveries. The NDC also has a considerable impact on the sustainability of logistics processes by significantly reducing CO2 emissions in goods transport. The operator of the NDC is the Geis Group, the logistics partner of MediaMarktSaturn Germany.
By centralizing its logistics, MediaMarktSaturn Germany further optimizes the implementation of its omnichannel strategy – ensuring the availability of products, services, and advice online and offline across all channels. The new National Distribution Center streamlines the processes in the company’s logistics and supply chain network and ensures optimal product availability for its customers. The newly built central warehouse NDC Göttingen/Rosdorf will serve as the new logistical hub for the entire German market. With its opening, the warehouse will initially supply all MediaMarkt and Saturn markets with product groups such as household & bathroom, computers & office, and smartphones. The NDC complements the existing nine warehouses in Germany: five online warehouses that exclusively cover online orders and four hubs from which large goods such as televisions and kitchen appliances are shipped to customers and markets.
Aligning Logistics Processes Consistently with Customer Needs
Sven Degezelle, Managing Director Commercial at MediaMarktSaturn Germany: “With the new National Distribution Center in Göttingen, we can consistently align our logistics processes with the needs of our customers and manage product availability even more precisely. Our customers benefit from even faster and more sustainable deliveries – whether to their homes or to the market. At the same time, we significantly streamline the logistics processes in the markets, freeing up more resources for customer consultation. Overall, we are enhancing a positive shopping experience for our customers.”
Michael Lauer, Head of Logistics at MediaMarktSaturn Germany: “The new warehouse spans a property area of over 120,000 m², with approximately 72,000 m² designated for storage and 6,100 m² for office and administrative space. With our 80 loading bridges and eight ground-level loading ramps, we enable the processing of initially 1.2 million sales units per month, with plans to expand to a double-digit million range per month. Currently, around 150 people work at this location, and in the full expansion phase, it will be around 800 employees.”
Sustainable Logistics
During construction, special attention was paid to scalability, state-of-the-art and resource-saving construction methods, as well as the highest sustainability requirements in operation. The NDC is currently aiming for a silver certification from DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council), which is expected to be successfully completed by early 2022. The photovoltaic system installed on the roof, which can generate around 410,000 kW/h of electricity per year, will also power the LED hall lighting, office equipment, and forklift chargers. Surpluses will be fed into the grid.
With the centralized and consolidated supply of the markets, direct deliveries by various suppliers to the markets are eliminated. This significantly reduces the goods transport, which accounts for a large portion of CO2 emissions. Last but not least, the use of forklifts with lithium-ion batteries, which have a lighter construction, reduces CO2 emissions by about 16 percent compared to conventional warehouse vehicles.
