Feb 2, 2021 at 6:22 PMThe specialist for container hinterland transport, Contargo, extends trains arriving from China on the New Silk Road in Duisburg with inland shipping to Valenciennes in France. The containers took just 20 days to travel from China to France, including two days from Duisburg to Valenciennes.
(Duisburg; Valenciennes/F) Contargo has today unloaded containers at the terminal in Valenciennes that arrived by rail from China in Duisburg two days earlier and were then transported to France by an inland vessel operated by Contargo. The journey of the approximately forty 40-foot containers on this route from China to France took less than twenty days in total.
The sea containers destined for the French market were loaded at two terminals in the Duisburg port. The containers traveled the route from Duisburg to Northern France on a 110-meter long and 11.40-meter wide inland vessel of the Grand Rhine type, which has a total capacity of 104 TEU. The terminal operated by Contargo in Valenciennes is the only one in the Hauts-de-France region that can handle inland vessels of this type.
Rail Traffic China – Europe Has Increased Significantly During Corona
The transport time from Duisburg to Valenciennes by inland vessel is approximately 60 hours. In total, the containers were on the way for less than 20 days, which is half the time compared to sea transport. This new inland shipping service allows various terminals in Duisburg to consolidate the containers destined for the French market, which arrive weekly by about thirty trains from China.
“With the Corona crisis and its impact on international freight transport, rail container traffic between China and Europe developed significantly in 2020, with Duisburg as a hub for final distribution to all European countries. This first round trip on the waterway between Duisburg port and Valenciennes integrates the terminal into the schedules of the New Silk Road and offers companies in our region new opportunities,” says Gilbert Bredel, Managing Director of Contargo North France.
