Dec 18, 2020 at 6:35 AMMaersk, the world’s largest container shipping company, plans a logistics and distribution center in Duisburg’s Logport VI. An area of over 100,000 m2 is to be made available. The negotiations are in the final phase, and 350 jobs are expected to be created. This is the second largest project of Duisburger Hafen AG in the last 20 years.
(Duisburg) The container logistics company Maersk and duisport are joining forces to establish and operate a new distribution and logistics center in Duisburg. The new hall is to be planned and completed quickly. Overall, Maersk will take over an area of over 100,000 square meters at Logport VI. The contract negotiations are in the final phase. The settlement is associated with over 350 new jobs.
Ideal Location for Further Growth
On the nearly 43-hectare site, which features a 500-meter-long quay wall, a trimodal logistics location of the logport family, including a container terminal, is being developed. The site in Walsum is considered the second largest project of Duisburger Hafen AG in the past 20 years after Logport I in Duisburg-Rheinhausen.
“Our customers need more than just pure transport services from port to port. By accompanying them throughout the entire transport chain from door to door, we create real added value for our customers and reduce complexity in their supply chains. As a global integrator for container logistics, Maersk has the necessary assets, know-how, and years of experience. We are very pleased to have found a partner in duisport who understands this pronounced customer orientation and provides us with the infrastructural prerequisites at this attractive location,” says Jens-Ole Krenzien, Vice President North West Continent Region at Maersk.
Excellent Infrastructure and Connectivity
“Logport VI enables long-term and sustainable competitive advantages. The new container terminal directly on the Rhine, the direct connection to intermodal transport chains in the European hinterland, as well as to Asia, are advantages in international competition. The establishment of Maersk shows that the logistics hub Duisburg is a must for the big players in the industry,” says Erich Staake, Chairman of the Board of Duisburger Hafen AG.
Strategically Important Partner
“We are very proud of this joint project in Duisburg, which will enable us to offer our customers comprehensive and tailored logistics solutions in the heart of Europe,” says Krenzien. “The location will serve as an additional hub in our customers’ supply chains. The commitment to Logport VI aligns with our strategy to enable integrated logistics solutions for our customers worldwide. Duisburg, as a leading logistics hub in Central Europe, is an ideal location for this project.”
The number of jobs at the site is significantly above expectations. With the establishment of Maersk and previously acquired investors, a total of over 600 jobs will be created.
After the contract is signed and all necessary permits are obtained, Maersk will develop a large distribution and warehouse complex in two phases. The company will occupy a large part of the total area of over 100,000 square meters. In a further expansion phase, an additional 50,000 square meters could be added. “After purchasing the site, I set a goal to double the previous number of employees at the paper factory (300 jobs). We will exceed this forecast with the establishment of Maersk,” emphasizes Erich Staake, Chairman of the Board of Duisburger Hafen AG.
