Jul 6, 2026 at 12:48 PMThe Management Committee of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea (AdSP), responsible for the ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure, has decided on several measures aimed at increasing the operational efficiency of port operations and improving logistical services. A particular focus is on the development of freight transport by rail and strengthening the road transport sectors.
Awarding of the rail operations service
One of the key decisions includes the approval of the results of the tender procedure for the awarding of the rail operations service in the ports of Savona and Vado Ligure. The service has been awarded to Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal S.r.l. after two companies participated in the public tender. The award has a duration of five years with the possibility of an extension for an additional two years and has an estimated total value of approximately 22.6 million EUR. This service is crucial for the operational continuity of the two port facilities.
The selected offer stood out both technically and economically, providing a discount of 12.6% on the original rates. It includes an integrated model for the execution of rail operations and traction, which encompasses a 24/7 operational organization. Additionally, environmentally friendly solutions will be implemented through the use of low-emission biofuels, as well as digital systems for managing activities and an improved maintenance program for infrastructure and vehicles.
The new tender procedure aims to strengthen intermodal rail connections, enhance the competitiveness of the ports of Savona and Vado Ligure, and promote the development of rail freight transport in line with the authority’s sustainability goals.
New parking facilities for trucks
Furthermore, the committee has also approved the awarding of a concession for a period of four years to Trasportounito Service Cooperativa Consortile. This concession concerns an open area of approximately 6,300 m² along the lateral lanes of the port overpass at Varco Etiopia in the port of Genoa. A new regulated parking lot for heavy vehicles is to be established here. This measure is necessary to create an alternative solution to the currently used areas in the Science and Technology Research Park Erzelli, which are affected due to the commencement of construction for a new university site. This ensures operational continuity for the companies in road transport that serve the port of Genoa daily.
The new parking area is expected to improve the organization of parking for heavy vehicles, increase traffic capacity, make logistical processes more efficient, and optimize safety conditions in the port area.
