Jun 25, 2026 at 9:40 AMThe Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the SPG Qingdao Port Group signed a port partnership in Qingdao on June 23, 2023, aimed at deepening the relationships between the two ports and intensifying the exchange of experiences. This partnership focuses particularly on the areas of port planning, sustainability, and intermodal transport. In 2016, the HPA and SPG had already signed a memorandum of understanding for strategic cooperation, followed by another declaration to establish a Green Shipping Corridor by 2025. The now formalized port partnership represents a continuation of this cooperation.
Strengthening Trade Relations
The signing took place during a roadshow of a delegation from Hamburg, which was in China from June 23 to 26. Participants included representatives from HPA, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), EUROGATE, TSIT, and Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM). The goal of the roadshow was to strengthen trade relations between China and the Port of Hamburg. During the „German Logistics Roundtable“ in Qingdao and the „Sino-German Logistics Roundtable“ in Shanghai, the performance and innovative strength of the Hamburg port economy were presented. The roadshow was complemented by a trade fair appearance under the umbrella of „German Ports“ at transport logistic Shanghai, which provided numerous opportunities for direct exchange between port representatives, logistics companies, and industry partners from China and Germany. Co-exhibitors Greiwing and Metrans were also present at the joint stand.
Friedrich Stuhrmann, Chief Commercial Officer of the Hamburg Port Authority, emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation with Chinese partners: „With our roadshow, we create the framework for an open dialogue on sustainable logistics, resilient supply chains, and joint future projects. In particular, with the port partnership with the Qingdao Port Group, we demonstrate how joint solutions for maritime transformation can be developed and how partners can benefit from each other across continents.“
The significance of the Port of Hamburg and its sustainability initiatives was also evident during the awarding of the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) Awards. The Port of Hamburg received the award for „Best Sustainable Port“ on Thursday. These awards are presented annually by Asia Cargo News, with around 15,000 readers voting for the winners.
In 2025, China remained the strongest trading partner of the Port of Hamburg, handling 2.3 million TEU. In total, approximately 19.9 million tons of goods were handled in maritime traffic between Hamburg and China last year. Hamburg is directly connected to the People’s Republic through 17 regularly operating services, including twelve container services, four general cargo services that also transport heavy cargo, and a RoRo service that also carries general cargo.
