Jun 8, 2026 at 12:16 PMIn April 2026, Polish rail traffic recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers as well as freight transport: According to the Office of Rail Transport in Poland, over 38.8 million passengers used the train, representing a growth of 10.1% compared to April 2025. In freight transport, a handled cargo volume of nearly 18.4 million tons was registered, marking an increase of 6.5% compared to the previous year.
Development in freight transport
In April 2026, the railways transported a total of nearly 18.4 million tons of goods, which is over 1.1 million tons more than in April 2025. The transported cargo volume exceeded 4.9 billion ton-kilometers, corresponding to an increase of 9.7%. The operational performance of the railways was almost 6.9 million train kilometers, also reflecting a growth of 9.1% compared to the previous year.
The average transport distance per ton of freight in April was 268 km, which is nearly 8 km more than in the same month last year. However, compared to the previous month of March 2026, there are declining trends in the key indicators of freight transport: The weight of the transported cargo decreased by almost 1 million tons, representing a decline of 4.9%. The freight transport performance also decreased by 4.4% to nearly 227.4 million ton-kilometers, while the operational performance fell by over 0.4 million train kilometers (-6.1%). Nevertheless, the average transport distance per ton of freight was nearly 1.5 km longer compared to the previous month.
