May 22, 2026 at 10:06 AMChina is expanding the use of the international TIR system for customs-sealed transport, thereby accelerating land traffic between Asia and Europe, as reported by the International Road Transport Union (IRU). By combining customs-free zones and TIR processing, transport can become faster, cheaper, and more efficient.
The procedure links the tax advantages of the so-called bonded zones with the simplified customs processes of the TIR system. This results in less transhipment and inspection, while import duties are only incurred later.
An example is provided by the port city of Qingdao in Shandong province on China’s northeastern coast. Recently, 40 t of electronic components were delivered by ship from Vietnam, consolidated in the free zone, and then transported to Azerbaijan by two TIR trucks.
According to those involved, their transit time was reduced by almost a week compared to pure maritime connections. In Binzhou, also in Shandong province, goods from Southeast Asia were transhipped in the Binzhou Bonded Logistics Centre onto six TIR vehicles and reached Azerbaijan within 15 days.
