May 21, 2026 at 11:21 AMThe port of Halifax and PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub have put two new electrically operated portal cranes into operation. The remote-controlled rail-mounted gantry cranes are the first of their kind in Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada) and are intended to increase capacity, efficiency and safety in terminal operations.
The investment is part of an ‚Inter-Terminal Rail Solution Project‘, an initiative led by the Halifax Port Authority and supported by Transport Canada’s ‚National Trade Corridors Fund‘. This project involves optimising rail capacities at the Atlantic Hub to meet growing demand.
Improving container handling
Operations are conducted from a central control station. This means that employees no longer have to work at great heights or in difficult weather conditions. At the same time, the new facilities are expected to improve accuracy and speed in container handling.
The cranes handle the loading and unloading of containers for rail shuttles between the Atlantic Hub and Fairview Cove terminals. According to the port, this could shift three-quarters of the truck traffic generated by port activities out of urban areas. Additionally, the electrically operated facilities are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 640 t annually.
