More modern ships require more modern crew training
Jul 3, 2026 at 9:36 AMMokulele Airlines has begun its first demonstration flights of the electric ALIA aircraft from Beta Technologies. These test flights, which will take place in the coming weeks, include routes from Honolulu to Kaunakakai and Lanai City. Future expansions of the test flights are planned to Kahului and Kona. Although Hawaiian Airlines is not officially acting as a partner, the company is reportedly providing logistical support.
Mokulele Airlines‘ parent company, Surf Air Mobility, placed an order for 25 ALIA aircraft in March 2026, with an option for 75 additional units. Beta Technologies aims to complete the certification of the aircraft within the next year.
Sustainable aviation for Hawaiʻi
The demonstration flights are intended to explore the potential of electric aircraft for inter-island transportation in Hawaiʻi, focusing on both passenger and cargo transport. The initiative combines Beta’s electric aircraft technology with Surf Air Mobility’s regional airline expertise, as well as the existing airport infrastructure in Hawaiʻi and the SurfOS™ software.
Officials are optimistic that these developments can lead to a more sustainable connection between the island communities. The test flights provide an initial insight into the potential benefits of cleaner and quieter air travel between the islands.
