Coalition protests against rail merger in the USA
Apr 30, 2026 at 10:32 AMThe truck tonnage in the USA recorded an increase of 0.3% in March 2026, following a rise of 2.9% in February. This is indicated by the seasonally adjusted „For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index“ of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), which has been calculated based on surveys of its members since the 1970s.
According to Bob Costello, the chief economist of the ATA and vice president of the IRU Goods Transport Council, the increase in March was not particularly strong compared to previous months, but it was the largest year-over-year increase since October 2022. Costello emphasized that the first quarter of 2026 represents the best performance since the third quarter of 2017 when both sequential and year-over-year results are considered.
Development of the tonnage index
In March 2026, the seasonally adjusted ATA index for for-hire truck tonnage reached a value of 117.0, which is an increase from 116.6 in February. The index is based on the year 2015, which serves as a reference value of 100. Compared to March 2025, the index rose by 3%, marking the largest annual increase since October 2022. In the first three months of 2026, tonnage increased by 2.1% compared to the previous year.
