Mar 30, 2026 at 10:09 AMThe Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has selected Cavnue, LLC as a partner for the pilot project „Smart Freight Corridor“ between Memphis, the global air freight hub of FedEx, and Blue Oval City. This initiative aims to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and promote technology in freight transportation along Interstate 40.
Evaluation of Technologies for Freight Transportation
The multi-year pilot project will test connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies under real operational conditions. TDOT hopes that the data and insights gathered will help develop long-term strategies for modernizing freight transportation in Tennessee. This is TDOT’s first dedicated initiative in the field of smart freight transportation, allowing the department to experiment with new technologies in collaboration with Cavnue while maintaining control over the roads, data, and future decisions.
In the coming months, Cavnue will begin planning and designing the project under the supervision of TDOT. Following approval from TDOT, the project will transition into the phase of temporary road testing, followed by a final evaluation intended to inform future decisions in freight transportation and infrastructure.
As part of this initiative, Cavnue will undertake the following tasks:
– Conduct a detailed analysis of the corridor and infrastructure
– Develop the operational concept and design of the pilot
– Install temporary technologies on roads and vehicles
– Collect and analyze real-time data on freight and traffic
– Evaluate system performance, safety impacts, and operational benefits
– Engage stakeholders
The Interstate 40 corridor is among the busiest and economically significant freight routes in Tennessee. Given the rapid industrial growth in West Tennessee, including significant investments in and around Blue Oval City, an increase in freight traffic is expected in the coming years. The pilot project aims to assist TDOT in better understanding how new technologies in freight transportation can:
– Improve safety and reduce congestion
– Support connected applications for various fleets
– Enhance incident response and system efficiency
– Inform long-term planning and modernization strategies in freight transportation at the state level
The pilot project is scheduled to run until 2028 and includes planning, design, installation, testing, and up to one year of performance evaluation.
Officials emphasized that the introduction of new technologies is crucial for strengthening freight corridors in Tennessee and preparing the state for advancements in autonomous and connected freight systems that improve safety, mobility, and reliability.
