Mar 30, 2026 at 8:59 AMThe Bahamas has initiated a reform process in maritime regulation with the „Merchant Shipping Act 2021.“ The new regulations, set to come into effect on April 1, 2026, aim to modernize the regulatory framework for shipping in the country and align it with the requirements of the global shipping industry, as reported by the Bahamas Maritime Authority.
Modernization of the regulatory framework
The updated regulations consolidate various aspects of maritime legislation, including ship registration, fee structures, safety inspections, inspections, and standards for maritime personnel and yachts. According to the authority, these measures are intended to ensure that the Bahamas aligns with international conventions and best practices while reflecting the needs of the modern shipping industry.
A key element of the new framework is the introduction of a more flexible legislative structure. This is intended to enable the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) to respond more quickly to regulatory developments and changing industry requirements without the need for extensive legislative reforms.
