The British food wholesaler Bidfood has expanded its vehicle fleet with two 18-ton trucks equipped with Ecooltech transport refrigeration systems. This measure aims to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions from refrigerated transport. Faye Reeve, purchasing manager at Bidcorp UK, emphasizes that the use of natural refrigerants can save up to 25 tons of CO2 equivalent per truck.
The new vehicles are equipped with multi-temperature bodies and will be used in regional distribution. They supply schools, hospitals, and restaurants, among others. Reeve highlights that the systems have already proven effective in practical use and operate reliably. With this investment, Bidfood aims to further advance the decarbonization of its fleet and take a leading role in CO2-neutral temperature-controlled transport.
Long-term Operational Reliability in Focus
The decision to use Ecooltech systems is based on several factors, including the long-term use of refrigerated vehicles, which typically lasts about ten years. Reeve explains that total operating costs play a crucial role, considering aspects such as energy efficiency and maintenance effort. Upcoming changes due to the F-gas regulation, which restricts the use of synthetic refrigerants, also influence purchasing decisions. This regulation could significantly limit the availability of refrigerants in the future.
The F-gas regulation, aimed at reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), is also expected to be implemented in the UK. The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has already proposed a phased reduction of F-gases by 2030. This could jeopardize the operational reliability of conventional transport refrigeration systems, as the availability of refrigerants will be restricted.
Technological Innovations from Ecooltech
Ecooltech has developed a new generation of transport refrigeration units that do not require an integrated diesel engine. These systems can be operated electrically, leading to a significant reduction in local pollutant and CO2 emissions. The use of natural refrigerants such as CO2 and propene, which have negligible greenhouse potential, represents another advantage.
The refrigeration systems from the German company are characterized by high energy efficiency and require 60% less fuel compared to conventional systems. Additionally, they produce up to 80% less CO2 emissions. These features make Ecooltech technology an attractive option for companies looking to improve their environmental footprint.
With the investment in the new refrigeration systems, Bidfood is taking another step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly logistics.
