Mar 16, 2026 at 10:28 AMThe international industry organisation InterManager has urged shipping companies and ship managers to exercise great caution when planning to transit the Strait of Hormuz, following recent security incidents and attacks on merchant vessels in the Persian Gulf region.
According to the association the security situation has deteriorated significantly. Ship managers, owners and operators should therefore carefully assess whether transit through the strait is necessary. The safety and wellbeing of seafarers must remain the top priority.
Warning after IMO emergency meeting
The statement follows an emergency cross-industry meeting at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The session was convened by IMO secretary general Arsenio Dominguez, after several security-related incidents occurred in and around the strait.
InterManager secretary general Captain Kuba Szymanski stated that the recent escalation is deeply concerning for global shipping. Seafarers should not be exposed to unnecessary risks while performing their essential role in international trade.
InterManager therefore recommends careful analysis of the risks before any planned transit and avoiding the strait whenever possible. The organisation continues to monitor the situation and will keep its members informed of further developments.
