18% decline in global air freight capacity
Mar 4, 2026 at 8:34 AMThe French Pan Européenne Air Service has placed a firm order for the regional hybrid-electric aircraft ERA, becoming the first airline to do so. This 19-seat aircraft (a pure cargo version with a capacity of 21 m³ and 2 tons is also planned), developed by AURA AERO from Toulouse, aims to contribute to the decarbonization of aviation. Pan Européenne has been a partner since the beginning of the program and recently participated in electrical tests with the INTEGRAL E project.
The co-managing directors of Pan Européenne, Antoine Foessel and Clément Jacquot, commented on the decision: “The ambitions and values of AURA AERO align perfectly with our vision of a forward-looking aviation. The technological and industrial choices made in the development of the ERA have proven to be extremely relevant. Therefore, we have decided to choose this aircraft to offer the first solution for decarbonized air transport in history.”
Technical Features of the ERA
The ERA has been developed to revitalize regional aviation while accelerating its decarbonization. It features eight electric ENGINeUS engines from Safran, which are considered the first certified electric engines worldwide. Additionally, two turbo generators are integrated, compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The aircraft offers intelligent control that switches between hybrid and electric phases and has a range of up to 900 nautical miles (1,500 km). According to AURA AERO, the ERA can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80%.
Demand for the ERA is high, with nearly 700 expressed orders from 16 international operators, representing a potential order volume of USD 12 billion. Pan Européenne Air Service positions itself as a pioneer in the development of environmentally friendly air freight solutions.
