Feb 4, 2026 at 9:04 AMThe American Great Lakes Ports Association (AGLPA), in collaboration with the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS), has initiated a market analysis aimed at expanding freight traffic between the Great Lakes and the inland waterways system of the United States. This study is supported by several member ports of the AGLPA, including the Ports of Indiana, the Illinois International Port District (IIPD), and Port Milwaukee.
Economic Importance of the Waterways
The Great Lakes and the adjacent inland waterways transport nearly 700 million tons of goods annually, according to the AGLPA. These transport routes are crucial for various American industries, including the steel industry, agriculture, and manufacturing. However, despite the high traffic density of these waterways, only a small portion of goods is transported between the Great Lakes and the inland rivers. The planned study will examine various aspects of waterway traffic, including market demand, potential freight flows, and the infrastructural and operational requirements necessary for a stronger integration of the two transportation systems.
