VCS criticizes Swiss Federal Council
Jan 29, 2026 at 10:30 AMThe government of the Republic of Palau has tasked the Palau Ship Registry with the management of the country’s official shipping register. This decision is part of a new governance framework aimed at accountability, transparency, and compliance with international maritime standards, as reported in a statement.
In December 2025, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Industry took over responsibility for the ship register. This measure was intended to ensure that services for ships under the Palauan flag continue without interruption. During this transition period, registration services were continuously provided while the government evaluated the future operational structure.
New Operational Framework
With the introduction of the new regulation, the Palau Ship Registry has now assumed responsibility for the daily operation of the register. The government has also confirmed that all maritime regulations, circulars, notices, and legal documents issued in the name of the Republic of Palau prior to the new operational regulation remain valid. This includes ship and seafarer certificates as well as seafarer identification and registration books.
