In addition to the engine, Wärtsilä will also supply the fuel gas supply system and the exhaust gas treatment. The order was placed in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Ammonia as an alternative fuel
Ammonia has established itself as an alternative fuel and will play a significant role in achieving the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, the company states. A report by Wärtsilä titled „Sustainable Fuels for Shipping by 2050 – The Three Key Factors for Success“ highlights the importance of sustainable fuels in achieving this goal. According to the report, existing decarbonization solutions could reduce emissions in shipping by up to 27 percent. Sustainable fuels are thus seen as a step towards eliminating the remaining 73 percent of emissions.
