Contargo receives 33 new electric trucks from DAF
Jan 23, 2026 at 3:54 PMEmirates SkyCargo has added Liège Airport (LGG) in Belgium to its cargo flight network. This is the first new destination for 2026, with the company planning significant expansion throughout the year. The decision follows sustained demand that has been met by ad-hoc services in recent years.
Liège Airport is strategically located in the so-called „golden triangle“ between Amsterdam, Paris, and Frankfurt, and has developed into one of the fastest-growing cargo hubs in the world. In 2025, the airport recorded a 14% increase in cargo volume. Emirates SkyCargo had previously served Liège with ad-hoc cargo flights (photo) to transport specialized products such as fresh flowers and e-commerce packages. Additionally, special charter flights for horses to international competitions were offered. The new regular service will increase the available cargo capacity by 500 tons per week.
Expansion of Cargo Offerings
Of the five weekly cargo flights, three will connect Liège with O’Hare International Airport in Chicago and Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai. These flights are designed to transport temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals via a continuous cold chain. The remaining two flights will depart from Hong Kong, carrying e-commerce shipments to and through Liège.
Khawla Abdulla, Vice President of Cargo Commercial for Europe at Emirates SkyCargo, stated: „The inclusion of Liège in our cargo flight network is a strategic step that strengthens our presence in Europe and offers our global customers more connectivity.“ In 2025, over 15,000 tons of cargo were transported from Belgium, both via cargo flights and the bellyhold capacity of passenger flights to Brussels. Abdulla anticipates significant growth with the introduction of the five weekly cargo flights.
Torsten Wefers, Vice President Sales and Marketing at Liège Airport, also expressed positive sentiments about the new connection: „We are honored that Emirates SkyCargo has included Liège Airport in its global cargo flight network. The new scheduled services connect Liège with other major global airports, including the Emirates SkyCargo Dubai hub.“ Wefers emphasized the growing importance of the airport for the European air cargo industry and the strengthening of its position „as the largest European cargo hub focused on pharmaceuticals, perishables, live animals, and express deliveries.“
Emirates SkyCargo serves Europe with 38 cargo aircraft and 538 passenger flights per week. The company plans to further expand its coverage, including the announcement of passenger flights to Helsinki, which are set to begin in October 2026. With the delivery of up to ten new Boeing 777F by December 2026, Emirates SkyCargo will be able to expand its network and serve additional destinations with its product and service.
