Hansen, who is currently serving as President and CEO of Hempel, will succeed Torben Carlsen, who will resign on the same day. The appointment is part of a succession process announced on November 6, 2025, aimed at bringing fresh perspectives to DFDS’s ongoing transformation.
New Leadership Approach for DFDS
Claus V. Hemmingsen, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, expressed positive sentiments regarding Hansen’s appointment: “I am very pleased to welcome Michael Hansen to DFDS. Michael brings new perspectives and experiences to lead the ongoing transformation of the company. The short-term task is to enhance financial performance. In the long term, we aim to unlock the value of the network by optimizing operations and organic growth, based on DFDS’s enduring strengths, particularly our valued customer offerings and service levels, as well as our capable employees.”
Michael Hansen has extensive leadership experience in shipping, transport, and industry. In his role at Hempel, he has led a strategic transformation that has improved financial performance and strengthened the scalability of operations. Previously, he spent nearly two decades at A.P. Moller – Maersk, where he held various senior management positions in Europe, Latin America, and Oceania, including the role of CEO of Seago Line and global head of sales for Maersk Line.
In an initial statement, Hansen said: “I am very much looking forward to joining DFDS and leading the ongoing transformation to profitable growth. I am passionate about motivating and empowering people to deliver commercial and financial performance, and equally passionate about driving sustainability. DFDS has an impressive legacy but faces challenges in some areas. Through collaboration and leveraging our strong network, we can unlock our full potential.”
Michael Hansen’s career includes the following positions: Since 2017, he has been serving as Group President and CEO at Hempel. Previously, he was active as Vice President and global head of sales at Maersk Line from 2016 to 2017. Before that, he was CEO of Seago Line and held various management positions at Maersk Line, including in Mexico, Spain, and New Zealand.
DFDS operates a transport network in and around Europe with an annual revenue of 30 billion DKK and employs 16,500 full-time staff. The company transports goods in trailers by ferry, road, and rail, and offers complementary transport and logistics solutions. Additionally, DFDS carries car and foot passengers on short-distance and overnight ferries. DFDS was founded in 1866 and is headquartered in Copenhagen.
