Dec 7, 2023 at 9:00 PMKaufland electrifies its trucks. The company is launching a groundbreaking project at its logistics site in Möckmühl. There, it is opening its first charging park with eight charging stations, each with a separate lane for an electric tractor unit including an electrically powered refrigerated trailer.
(Neckarsulm/Mockmühl) This project is one of the largest in Germany. The stations consist of DC charging stations with a power output of up to 350 kilowatts, enabling a very fast charging process.
Kaufland, in collaboration with Einride, one of the leading providers of intelligent solutions for digital, electric, and autonomous freight transport, is deploying heavy electric trucks for the delivery of its stores. Since its founding in 2016, the Swedish company has helped reduce the CO2 emissions of its business partners by up to 95 percent compared to driving with diesel. In the first phase of the strategic partnership, eight electric 40-ton trucks will be used to supply a total of ten stores in the Ludwigsburg area from the distribution center in Möckmühl.
Fully Electric Refrigerated Trailers
The trucks used are the eActros 300 model from Mercedes-Benz. Each has a permissible total weight of 40 tons and offers 33 Euro pallet spaces. Not only electric trucks are being used, but also fully electric refrigerated trailers. This way, over 20,000 pallets per month are to be moved electrically and thus emission-free – a transition that leads to an annual CO2 savings potential of around 900 tons. After the introductory phase, which lasts from the end of 2023 to mid-2024, it will be examined to what extent the partnership can be further scaled.
“Through the cooperation with Einride and the charging park in Möckmühl, we are able to significantly reduce our CO2 emissions in store deliveries in the future. The electric trucks are also very quiet, which is a huge advantage, especially for stores in city centers and residential areas. With this realignment, we are fulfilling our economic but above all our ecological responsibility,” says Alexander Frohmann, Managing Director of International Transport Logistics at Kaufland.
A Pioneering Role
“Kaufland plays a pioneering role as a successful international retail company that has been setting ambitious sustainability goals for years and pursuing them consistently and with innovative spirit. We are therefore proud to be partners in this transformation and look forward to making a significant joint contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and creating a sustainable and intelligent supply chain in the long term,” says Robert Ziegler, General Manager EMEA at Einride.
As part of a dialogue event with representatives from politics and business, the electric charging park was inaugurated yesterday afternoon. Among others, Elke Zimmer, State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport of Baden-Württemberg, visited the new charging park on-site and said afterwards: “To achieve the state’s climate protection goals, a transformation towards climate-neutral freight transport is essential. We want to ensure that by 2030, every second ton in freight transport is transported in a climate-neutral manner. For this, the establishment of a powerful charging infrastructure for electric trucks is an important building block. That companies take responsibility here and commit to change marks a significant step towards a sustainable future.”
A Shining Example
Using resources efficiently and thus promoting environmental protection: Kaufland has been pursuing these goals for many years – also in logistics. Recently, the company received the environmental award “3rd Star” from the initiative “Lean & Green” for its extensive reduction of CO2 emissions, becoming the first in the grocery retail sector to do so. In 2019, Kaufland Logistics was awarded the “Lean and Green 2nd Star” by GS1 Germany, in 2016 it received the “Lean and Green 1st Star,” and in 2014 the first award. Kaufland has already saved more than 40 percent of emissions compared to the baseline year as part of the initiative, making it a shining example in the grocery retail sector.
