May 5, 2022 at 1:07 PMUnder the title “Transparent Sustainability in Logistics and Supply Chain” a themed evening took place yesterday in Muttenz near Basel as a live event. Speakers included Tobias Häßler, CEO of BigMile Germany GmbH, and Daniel Bubendorf, CEO of The Supply Chain Experts GmbH. The topic is current and affects shippers from trade and industry as well as logistics service providers and carriers equally. However, what is crucial in this case is not only to act but also to talk about it, for example, to make CO2 savings transparent.
(Basel/Muttenz) Sustainability in logistics is a topic that no one likes to address, but it is current and necessary. On the one hand, due to the responsibility towards the environment, but also because of the ever-increasing demands from legislators.
This was also evident at an event in Muttenz near Basel, titled “Transparent Sustainability in Logistics and Supply Chain.” Tobias Häßler from BigMile spoke with the subtitle “BigMile – the digital platform for decarbonizing the supply chain,” and Daniel Bubendorf discussed “Sustainability along the supply chain from the consultant’s perspective.” The event was moderated by Andreas Müller from Loginfo24.
The two presentations complemented each other
The two presentations complemented each other. While BigMile is a platform that processes data from shippers and logistics service providers and makes it transparent in the form of, for example, emissions consumption, The Supply Chain Experts work with a consulting approach and support clients in building sustainability along the supply chain. Häßler emphasized that sustainability, particularly the footprint, is something that must be understood, measured, and then made transparent. “This can no longer be done with an intern filling out an Excel spreadsheet,” Häßler continued. “It must be done professionally, and it is a must. Those who do not take this seriously can quickly lose business, as more and more shippers are paying attention to whether their service providers meet the requirements regarding sustainability,” warns Häßler.
Social and government are further points of sustainability
In a holistic consulting approach, not only the CO2 footprint is part of sustainability, but also the social aspect with subtopics such as occupational safety, labor rights, child labor, etc., or corporate governance with points such as compliance, prevention of corruption, or risk management. “When building sustainability along the supply chain, we start with procurement, adjust the suppliers, continue with the optimization of the supply chains, and then look at the product with points like transport packaging, sales packaging, and composition,” explains Bubendorf the consulting approach to sustainability.
