Jul 8, 2021 at 3:55 PMThe US-based research and development company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) will present a virtual reality demonstrator at the ITS World Congress, showcasing how Hyperloop technology can be used to transport containers in seaport hinterland traffic.
(Hamburg/Toulouse) The corresponding technical concept was developed by both companies over the past two and a half years. The goal is to increase the capacity and efficiency of container terminals while reducing environmental impacts and congestion in ports worldwide.
HyperloopTT and HHLA decided to cooperate at the end of 2018. In the first step, a technical concept and a design study based on it for the HyperPortTM were developed. The next step is a construction-based virtual reality demonstrator, which will be exclusively presented at the ITS Congress, the world’s largest mobility fair. The congress will take place from October 11 to 15, 2021, in Hamburg.
HyperPortTM has been developed according to current industry standards and is a plug-and-play solution for port operators. The concept offers the possibility to transport containerized goods at high speed over hundreds of kilometers. The system can move up to 2,800 containers per day in a closed operational environment – without traffic and environmental impacts, reliably, efficiently, and safely. The individual HyperPortTM transport capsules provide space for two 20-foot standard containers or one 40 or 45-foot container, as well as high-cube containers.
Design by Mormedi
The transport capsules were designed by the award-winning Spanish industrial design company Mormedi, conveying an impression of the potential of the innovative logistics system. The technology, developed in collaboration with the Spanish engineering firm CT Ingenieros, has already reached construction maturity. The concept involves more than 20,000 working hours, including concepts, analytical models, calculations, cost-benefit studies, 3D visualizations, overall design optimizations, and integration possibilities. The HyperPortTM capsule, infrastructure, and system components are currently being further optimized.
Relieving Port Regions
“By using the same technology as for our passenger systems, HyperPort can future-proof supply chains while significantly relieving port regions,” said Andres De Leon, CEO of HyperloopTT. “The cooperation with world-leading companies to advance this technology creates added value for port operators around the globe.”
“At HHLA, we know that we must be innovative to prepare for the future,” said Gerlinde John, project manager of HyperPortTM at HHLA. “Hyperloop technology is suitable for elevating the transport of goods to a new level. With the HyperPort concept, we are working on an alternative solution to existing transport systems for the future goods transport of a rapidly growing global market.”
About HyperloopTT
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) is a transport and technology company specializing in the realization of Hyperloop technology. Hyperloop is a system that transports people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably by bringing the speed of airplanes to the ground. With patented technology and a collaborative business model, HyperloopTT creates the first new form of transport in over a century.
The European research and development center of HyperloopTT in Toulouse, France, houses the world’s first and only full-scale test system. In 2019, HyperloopTT published the first comprehensive feasibility study analyzing a Hyperloop system, which found that the system is technically feasible and can be operated profitably without government subsidies. HyperloopTT was founded in 2013 and consists of more than 800 engineers, creatives, and technicians in 52 multidisciplinary teams working with 50 companies and universities.
HyperloopTT is headquartered in Los Angeles and Toulouse and has offices in North and South America, the Middle East, and Europe. HyperloopTT is a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, reflecting the company’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
