Jul 15, 2026 at 8:25 AMGEODIS has renewed the certification of its Mass-Balance mechanism through Dekra Certification. This confirmation follows a comprehensive audit and demonstrates the reliability and traceability of the mechanism. Customers can thus receive an allocation of CO₂ emissions reductions based on a certified carbon accounting methodology.
The Mass-Balance mechanism has been implemented by GEODIS in its European road network since 2024. It allows customers to support the use of alternative energies within the network and receive the corresponding CO₂ emissions reductions. This is particularly relevant when the direct use of alternative energies for transport is not possible due to factors such as long transport routes without refueling infrastructure or regulatory restrictions. In this context, GEODIS utilizes various alternative energy sources, including HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), B100, and electricity, and allocates the corresponding CO₂ emissions reductions to customers who take advantage of the Mass-Balance offering.
Details on the mechanism’s functionality
The Mass-Balance mechanism enables customers who cannot directly decarbonize certain transport flows to support the use of alternative energy vehicles at other locations within the GEODIS network. In return, customers receive an allocation of the corresponding CO₂ emissions reductions, which is based on the chosen reduction level: 60%, 82%, or 90% compared to a diesel reference scenario. This flexibility is made possible by GEODIS’s diversified fleet, which is based on three alternatives to conventional diesel.
Full traceability of the alternative energy used is ensured, and the CO₂ emissions reductions are allocated according to the certified Mass-Balance mechanism. The methodology and the carbon accounting process are independently reviewed annually by Dekra Certification to ensure transparency and credibility.
Customer benefits and flexibility
The Mass-Balance mechanism offers customers several advantages. This includes the ability to select the degree of allocated CO₂ emissions reductions that best aligns with their decarbonization goals. Additionally, operational continuity is ensured without restrictions regarding transport distance, charging infrastructure, or availability of alternative fuels. Customers also receive reports on the CO₂ emissions reductions allocated under the certified Mass-Balance mechanism and can activate the mechanism at any time without operational impact.
Marc Vollet, EVP of European Road Networks at GEODIS, stated: “The renewal of this certification confirms the robustness of our Mass-Balance mechanism and reflects GEODIS’s commitment to providing practical solutions that support the decarbonization of road transport.” The mechanism is a key component of GEODIS’s decarbonization strategy and will help achieve the company’s validated targets from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which aims for a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its own fleet by 2030 and a 25% reduction in the carbon intensity of subcontractor transports.
Additionally, GEODIS’s Mass-Balance mechanism was recently awarded the “Jury’s Favourite” prize at the L’Oréal event “Spread the Green Vibes 2026.” This award recognizes initiatives for decarbonization in transport and highlights the certified, documented, and traceable nature of the mechanism.
