Driver shortage in the transport sector intensifies
Jul 1, 2026 at 9:44 AMSAS has announced the largest investment in its corporate history to strengthen Scandinavia’s connection to international markets. The order for up to 40 Airbus wide-body aircraft underscores the airline’s long-term commitment to enhancing the region’s global competitiveness.
Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS, stated: „For 80 years, SAS has connected Scandinavia to the world. Today, we are investing in the next chapter of our story.“ This investment, valued at over USD 10 billion, includes both new Airbus A330-900neo and additional A330-300 aircraft, which will support short-term growth ahead of the arrival of the new fleet.
Growth and economic impact
The announcement comes in the context of a comprehensive analysis examining the potential socioeconomic growth from the expansion at Copenhagen Airport by 2030. The study indicates that SAS’s planned expansion could create up to 25,000 additional jobs and contribute approximately EUR 3.25 billion to Denmark’s gross domestic product (GDP). This would increase the total number of jobs supported by SAS to 64,000 and raise the GDP contribution to EUR 8.58 billion. Additionally, around 4,000 new jobs are expected to be created in southern Sweden.
The findings highlight the role of international aviation as a driver of economic activity and competitiveness. While the focus is on Copenhagen Airport, other regions in Denmark and Scandinavia will also benefit from improved connections to global markets.
Significance for SAS Cargo
With an underfloor cargo capacity of over 40 tons, the new Airbus wide-body aircraft will also impact SAS’s cargo division. This investment represents a significant expansion of capacity for SAS Cargo, opening up additional opportunities for transporting goods between Scandinavia and international markets.
With the additional capacity, SAS Cargo will be able to meet the growing demands of the market while maximizing economic benefits for the region. This will not only strengthen SAS Cargo’s competitiveness but also enhance the overall logistics and transportation infrastructure in Scandinavia.
