Jun 22, 2026 at 9:10 AMCargolux and the Dutch animal welfare organization Bears in Mind have once again launched a collaboration to transport six Asian bears from South Korea to their new habitat at Knuthenborg Safari Park in Denmark. According to the Luxembourg-based cargo airline, the transport has been offered as a free flight, with the company providing its expertise in the transportation of live animals. The initiative aims to bring the bears one step closer to their natural habitat.
The six bears, who were previously kept under poor conditions in so-called bear farms in South Korea, have spent their entire lives in cramped cages. This rescue operation takes place in the context of South Korea’s decision to ban bear farms starting in early 2026. This decision marks the end of an industry that has kept bears in small cages since the 1980s to harvest their bile for traditional medicine.
Ingrid Vermeulen from Bears in Mind stated:
“We have been involved in the situation of bile bears in Asia for years. When it became clear that South Korea would ban the industry but was simultaneously struggling to accommodate the bears, we knew we had to act. These bears deserve a second chance – and we are giving it to them.”
At Knuthenborg Safari Park, the bears will have an area of 23,000 m² where they can experience a natural environment for the first time. They will have the opportunity to move among trees and water and dig in the earth.
The rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with several partners, including the Knuthenborg Safari Park, the Danish animal welfare organization Dyrenes Beskyttelse, the Korean Welfare Association, and Korean University. This initiative represents a significant step towards animal welfare and demonstrates the commitment of the involved organizations to the well-being of the animals.
