Jun 22, 2026 at 11:44 AMZebu Air, a London-based provider of ACMI services with a business focus in Malawi, has expanded its cargo fleet with two new cargo aircraft: an Ilyushin IL-76TD and, for the first time, a Boeing 737-300 (photo). This expansion aims to strengthen the company’s cargo operations and increase the range of services offered. The new aircraft enable Zebu Air to conduct both heavy and oversized cargo as well as more flexible transport missions.
Fleet expansion for diverse transport needs
The Ilyushin IL-76TD is a four-engine transport aircraft originally developed in the Soviet Union for military purposes, but this variant is used for civilian cargo operations. With a maximum payload of up to 40 tons and a range of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 km, the IL-76TD is particularly suited for long transport distances. The aircraft features a pressurized cargo hold with a rear loading ramp, allowing for a quick loading and unloading process of oversized goods. Additionally, it can operate from unpaved runways, making it ideal for missions in remote areas.
The Boeing 737-300, on the other hand, is a twin-engine passenger aircraft designed for short to medium-haul flights. In its cargo version, it can transport between 18 and 21 tons of freight and offers space for up to ten standard pallets on the main deck. The 737-300F is characterized by improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise emissions, making it a popular choice for cargo operators worldwide.
Flexibility and efficiency in cargo transport
The new aircraft enable Zebu Air to respond to seasonal demand spikes and meet ad-hoc requirements. The IL-76TD and the Boeing 737-300F expand the company’s operational capabilities and provide a reliable solution for various transport needs. The combination of high payload and flexible operational capability is expected to enhance the efficiency of cargo operations and better meet customer demands.
With these investments in the fleet, Zebu Air takes another step towards a stronger market position in the air freight sector and responds to the growing demands of the industry.
