On April 24, Gebrüder Weiss officially opened its new logistics and IT center in Wolfurt with a symbolic act. Approximately 250 guests from politics and business attended the celebration, including Wolfram Senger-Weiss, the chairman of the management board, Vorarlberg’s governor Markus Wallner, and the mayor of Wolfurt, Angelika Moosbrugger. During the opening, a pallet of guest gifts was retrieved from the fully automated high-bay warehouse and presented on stage.
In his speech, Senger-Weiss emphasized the strategic importance of the new location. He stated that the logistics and IT center is designed for process efficiency and long-term growth. „With this location, we are taking a central development step for our company. We are deliberately investing in an economically challenging environment and creating infrastructure that is designed for decades,“ said Senger-Weiss. He explained that the close integration of logistics and IT allows for targeted further development of processes and makes supply chains more transparent and stable for customers.
Important Hub for International Goods Flows
The new location is also intended to strengthen Vorarlberg’s role as a hub for international goods flows. Governor Wallner emphasized the project’s significance for the region: „This investment is a clear commitment to the economic location of Vorarlberg. Efficient logistics is the backbone of our export-oriented economy and strengthens our businesses in international competition.“
The logistics and IT center covers an area of approximately 31,000 m² and follows an integrated construction concept. The vertical arrangement of logistics, office, and technical spaces aims to utilize the limited spatial resources in the Rhine Valley efficiently. The high-bay warehouse has space for 68,000 pallets and is complemented by a manual warehouse and a three-story office building, which will create around 400 jobs.
Automation and Efficiency
The centerpiece of the facility is a 34-meter-high high-bay warehouse with 13 storage aisles, equipped with a fully integrated intralogistics system. Up to 160 pallets can be stored and 200 pallets retrieved per hour. This makes the logistics center one of the larger fully automated facilities in Europe. The technologies used include automatic storage and retrieval systems, autonomous transport vehicles, and digitally controlled conveyor technology. Senger-Weiss emphasized that despite the automation, humans play a central role in the processes.
The decision for the location in Wolfurt was made due to its proximity to the freight station, enabling efficient connections between road and rail transport. This contributes to reducing emissions and traffic congestion. Additionally, customers benefit from the location in the Four-Country Corner, which serves as an interface for central European goods flows.
Sustainability aspects were considered in both construction and operation. The use of CO₂-reduced concrete and the installation of a photovoltaic system with a capacity of approximately 1.5 megawatt peak are part of the energy concept.
With an investment volume of around 100 million euros, the logistics and IT center is a central component of Gebrüder Weiss’s long-term growth strategy. Senger-Weiss stated that the project is not only important for the company’s further development but also consolidates the goods flows of the regional export economy and provides a hub for global distribution. The logistical and technical standards implemented in the project are intended to serve as a basis for further site developments, including a planned automated logistics terminal in Pratteln near Basel.
